The last two months have been all about names for Peter. Dozens of times each day, he asks “what are you doing?” (which no longer implies mischief) and “What’s that?” He’s also continually pointing out everything that he knows the name for, multiple times, until you acknowledge that he has correctly identified the item.
His observational powers are quite impressive; as adults we filter our a lot, but he will notice the background sounds of helicopters, airplanes, and fire engines and point them out to us. We’ve grown somewhat tired of “what are you doing?” because he will ask it even when he knows very well what we are doing. A typical interaction:
Peter: I want some water
Me: goes to get water
Peter: What are you doing?
Me: Um, getting some water, like you asked me to
Still, it’s amazing to see all the things that he can name at this point, and the distinctions he can make. On our cruise, he has entertained the other passengers in our elevators by pointing out the different floors and the door close, door open, and emergency telephone buttons.
